Last night my sweet little Camilla broke her arm. Perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise based on my last post but broken bones are never something you expect to have happen.
She loves to do whatever her siblings are doing. We put her up on the bar stool to eat dinner with them as we often do. Somehow she lost her balance and fell backward. She caught her fall with her left arm. She was instantly inconsolable and wouldn't use the arm. We decided that Curtis would take her in to the Instacare. It turns out that she broke both of her bones in her forearm. Luckily the break is not near any growth plates. The Doctor gave us hope of a good and fast recovery.
He put a splint and sling on and told us to talk to our Pediatrician to see if he wants her to have a cast. Camilla thinks her doggy(Peanuts) sling is cute but she is not so fond of wearing it. Hopefully she will get used to it quickly.
This experience has not changed her personality. I took her sling off for her nap. I guess she loved the freedom because as soon as it came off, she climbed on top of the dresser next to my bed and jumped. She is so mischievous I am going to have to watch her carefully.

How ironic that her broken arm came so soon after your post about the terrible twos. :)
She is a cutie. I hope that she recovers quickly.

I feel for you Terri. Rebekah was 18 mos. when she broke her right elbow. She broke hers basically the same way Camilla did, by falling off of a kitchen booster chair. She too caught the weight of her fall with her one arm. Hers did break through the growth plate, but they were able to surgically insert 3 pins to hold the broken chip in place and had a hot pink cast for 6 weeks. It was a challenge to bathe her because, of course, it had to stay completely dry--we covered it with a plastic bag, taped it at the top with packaging tape, then wrapped it with plastic wrap. It seemed to do the trick for bath time. Bekah's demeanor wasn't affected at all. She still did everything. Her arm was cast at an angle so it was hard for her to do much with it, but she adapted beautifully. She had to use handled sippys for the duration so she could do it one-handed. And I'm fairly certain she would have been right-handed had she not broken her elbow at that time. But all is well with her as a lefty--this way she gets to be more like her Uncle Curtis. It was a little tricky working with the cast, but not too bad. We did have to make some adjustments though. I didn't want to go out and purchase special clothes for such a short time, so her upper body wardrobe was quite limited. I pretty much dressed her in onesies as shirts the whole time because they were the only things stretchy enough to fit around her very thick elbow (because of the pins and the cast). It was winter time too, so it was tricky to get her warm enough to go outside--again because of the thickness of the cast (I layered on stretchy sweaters). It was an experience to remember and now all is well. Rebekah has annual check-up to make sure that everything continues to grow properly and so far all is well. I wish you and Curtis both luck and Camilla a speedy recovery. Tell the rest of your muncklins that Sarah, Rebekah, Emily, Aunt Julia, and Uncle Blaine say "hi" and that "they miss them".
Lots of love.
Julia
